Speed is crucial for accuracy. Live bass, from instruments or explosions, is fast and powerful. Subwoofers struggle to reproduce realistic bass because subs are naturally large, heavy, and slow. They are also the most susceptible to enclosure resonance which slows them down further and adds distortion. This is why subwoofers can sound sloppy, and often distort.
