A: Speaker wire comes in all price ranges from cheap to astronomical. We don’t feel it is necessary to spend a lot on wire. We recommend using either 12 gauge or 14 gauge wire (use the thicker 12 gauge for longer distances). After listening to many wire samples we’ve chosen the wire we feel sounds best for the most reasonable price. However, there are many quality choices on the market.
Can you please elaborate on what you consider “long distances”? The place we are moving to has wiring run with 14 gauge in the wall. Looking at about 30 foot runs to get from the receiver to the rear channels. Any concerns with that when driving CG4’s with an Onkyo TX-NR929? Thanks
Hi Greg,
Correct type of wire depends on distance and speaker impedance. 14 gauge is most common. Its maximum usable distance is 40ft for a 4ohm speaker, or 80ft for an 8ohm speaker. CG4s are 4ohms. 12 gauge should be used if you have a run longer than 40 ft.
Wow -thank you for clarifying so quickly and completely. Love my RSL speakers! I’ve had them since 2012 and have been thrilled with both the product and the pre- and even post-sales support.
