The NEW CG3M is a boundary breaker. It achieves performance so far beyond the limits that price has established, that the CG3M exists in a class by itself. Designed to master the stringent demands of two-channel, the CG3M’s exceptional clarity, remarkable resolution, and spectacular imaging, provides an experience unparalleled in realism. Never before has such a small, modestly-priced speaker sounded so spacious, three-dimensional, and true-to-life.

My treble-challenged 63-year-old ears had been struggling to make out the dialog coming from my TV, and I finally realized that my old Polk soundbar just wasn’t cutting it anymore. I decided that instead of getting another traditional soundbar, I would be better off compiling a custom one out of high-quality but relatively inexpensive components. Starting with a pair of CG3Ms was a no-brainer, mostly because of how much I love the CG5/Speedwoofer combo in my main system. Hint: it’s a LOT.

The CG3Ms in my new “sound bar†are fed by a Schiit Syn DAC/preamp and an RSL ia255.1 amp. Unfortunately, a Speedwoofer wasn’t going to work, because everything had to fit onto a revolving tray along with the TV so that it can all point towards either the couch or the bed. I wound up going with one of Dayton’s low-profile subs. (As an aside, I'll bet an RSL low-profile sub would be spectacularly good. Food for thought...)

I don’t use the Syn’s sub-out because its 80Hz low-pass filter is too low to be optimal with the frequency response of the CG3Ms. Instead, I use the sub out on the RSL amp (with the 90-Hz high-pass filter engaged, of course) and set the sub’s low-pass filter to 90Hz. Nice.

The result is everything I had hoped it would be. The sound is now much better in every way: more robust, more accurate, and most importantly of all, a whole lot more detailed. I don’t need captions anymore!

If I ever move and don’t need the revolving setup anymore, I will probably add a GG23M for the center channel and another pair of CG3Ms for the surrounds. But for now, I don’t feel like this 2.1 system is lacking anything at all.

I have been using the RSL CG3M almost daily in my office stereo for the past 5 months and have become quite attached to them in that time. They do everything a good speaker should and I haven’t found anything I can fairly criticize in that time considering their size and price. The easiest way to describe them is as balanced and satisfying. Transparency/imaging/soundstage are all excellent. High’s are refined and have remarkable clarity that gives it very good low volume performance without having a boosted treble and conveys every bit of detail without sounding unnatural or bright. The mid-range is neutral w/ great tone and gives vocals convincing realism. The bass specs might look underwhelming but bass down to 100hz is rock solid/high quality and sets it up perfectly to blend/integrate seamlessly with a quality subwoofer. This rewards you with full range sound that is more point source than a typical tower speaker (it integrates with my REL HT1003 perfectly). As they say, there is no replacement for displacement with bass and I appreciate RSL choosing a roll off that makes sense for a speaker of this size. Small woofers struggle to produce deep bass and forcing one to do so usually muddy’s up the mid-range and makes for poor real world sensitivity. Despite their 86.5 db rating, I find these speakers quite easy to drive for their size since it never tries to reproduce bass it reasonably can’t. These little speakers seem to hit a sweet spot in size, performance and price. They are small enough to make them blend into your living space without drawing too much attention but reward you with big sound. RSL always seems to do a great job of combining quality components, engineering expertise and thoughtful design choices into a product that represents a best in class value. These speakers are a good example of that. Highly recommend!
