We purchased two “blemish” 12s from RSL and we still can’t find a “blemish” on either one – amazing! As always, communication and customer service from RSL has been top notch. We are returning customers, having previously bought two 10s (MK1). The 12s pair are their replacement. To anyone who owned/owns a 10s and is considering an upgrade to the 12s but may be on the fence, rest assured the sound signature of the 12s is practically identical. The biggest differences are in the scale of the sound and the low-end extension. The remote control is a nice addition, allowing for on-the-fly volume adjustments from the listening position, as well as the ability to turn the sub on and off. Also, the remote control uses IR, not BT, so you can use one remote for both subs; simply point the remote at the sub whose volume/power/DSP setting you would like to change. Speaking of the DSP, like many previous reviewers, we have stuck with reference. One thing that potential buyers really must be aware of when buying this sub is the weight and size. RSL emphasizes this on their website for good reason. It is HUGE and HEAVY. Taking the time to measure your available space and your ability to have someone help you lift the sub is important. In terms of setup, dialing the sub in was a little trickier than with previous subs we’ve owned (Paradigm pdr10, Paradigm PW2200v1, SVS SB1000, SVS PB1000 pro X 2, RSL SW10sMK1 X 2). Both the Paradigm and SVS subs were ready at 0 degrees phase at around 75hz with our towers in full range. The 10s blended at 180 degrees phase and could go all the way up to around 100hz, which was nice as they ended up sounding more “musical” than the other subs. The 12s took a lot of trial and error but we finally nailed it down to a phase of 45 degrees (approx. as the variable dial does not allow for exact fine-tuning as with the SVS subwoofer app), and, like the 10s, it blends perfectly at around 100hz. All of this will vary of course according to your room, etc. Overall, we are extremely happy with our purchase of the pair of 12s, as we were with the pair of 10s they have replaced. As long as you are willing to take the time to properly setup your sub(s) and get them dialed in properly, you will not be disappointed. I am a musician (bass player, specifically) and for me high quality bass (not just quantity) is a must when listening to music. As one person once wrote in a forum I was browsing: “a stereo without a sub is like a band without a bass player” I couldn’t agree more. Even those of you who own “full range” towers will get benefit from these. I hope this review is helpful to those who read it. Take care and thank you again Joe and Bernie at RSL!
